Times Green Ganesha kicks off eco-friendly celebrations
Mumbai…Times Green Ganesha (TGG) is an initiative by The Times of India along with Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to urge people to be conscious of the environment during the festive season. The 10th edition of TGG was launched today in the presence of Actor Vidyut Jamwal and Hollywood Director Charles ‘Chuck’ Russel, Dr. Yeshwant Sontakke and Sanjay Bhuskute of MPCB and Dr. Neelam Arora, Principal, Lala Lajpatrai College. Hundreds of students were ecstatic to see their favourite stars attending this eco-friendly initiative at their college.
This month-long campaign generates awareness about the delicate state of our environment and encourages people to celebrate the festival in an eco-friendly manner by using eco-friendly idols, reusable décor, reducing noise pollution and using artificial water body for immersion. TGG makes an appeal to people to avoid using Plaster-of-Paris, Plastic and Thermocol and all non-bio-degradable materials for idols and decoration. Over the last nine years this campaign has built awareness about eco-friendly efforts of several homes, societies and sarvajanik Ganesh mandals.
Vidyut Jamwal said, “All of you are aware of what needs to be done to curb pollution. Let us all come together to be environment friendly.”
Chuck Russel stated, “This is a great initiative and I wish you all happy festival. I am sure your will protect the environment. Conservation efforts are very critical for sustaining our environment.”
Dr. Neelam Arora, Lala Lajpatrai College stated, “We want our students to learn the importance of growing in a clean and green environment and keep ourselves healthy. We have conducted workshops to teach students how to make eco-friendly Ganesha. We are happy to partner with Timesgroup and support this cause.”
In addition to creating awareness and education, annual Times Green Ganesha Awards is instituted to encourage environment friendly thinking and instil a sense of responsibility amongst citizens. This award recognizes and rewards eco-friendly measures undertaken by Individual households, societies and Ganesh mandals on various parameters. The four main parameters are eco-friendly Ganesh moorty, decoration, procession and immersion. Winners will be felicitated at the grand finale in Mumbai.
